Alster Lake: There’s nothing more I love doing in Hamburg than going for a run around Alster Lake. This 160 hectare lake lies in the heart of the city and the permitter is approximately 7.5 km (4.7 miles) around. Along the shoreline, read a book and soak up the sun, meet friends for a bbq, or come back in the evening to watch a sunset. On the lake, take a boat trip, rent a sailboat, or try your hand at standup paddle boarding. Alster Lake is my absolute favorite place in Hamburg.
Elbestrände (Elbe Beach): Don’t let being in a city keep you from beach time. Join the locals along the bank of River Elbe for some sun or grab a drink at the popular urban beach club, Strandperle.
Hafen Hamburg (Port of Hamburg): Typically referred to as “the harbour”, it’s the largest port in Germany. The beach bars like StrandPauli are the place to watch the ships go by and sip on sundowners. Walk a couple blocks inland to see the famous Hamburg red light district, Reeperbahn, or come in May to celebrate the harbour’s anniversary at the largest port festival in the world.
Fischmarket (Fish Market): Take a stroll to buy some fresh fish off the boat or grab a beer and kick back while you listen to the live music bright and early Sunday mornings. It’s five o’clock somewhere!
Planten un Blomen (Plants & Flowers): This beautiful park stretches in the center of Hamburg across 47 hectares. The floral displays consist of a rose garden, a japenese garden, an apothecary garden and much more. In the summer, enjoy the colored water light concert daily at 2, 4 and 6pm and in winter, go ice skating on the largest outdoor skating rink in Europe. The large playground in the center makes this a popular choice park for families.
St. Michael’s Church: This Lutheran church is the most famous in the city. If you’re looking to see great views of Hamburg, this is the place to go.
Stadtpark (City Park): If you’re looking for space to BBQ in Hamburg, Stardpark is it. The wide open park spans 148 hectares and for a small fee, you can go for a swim in the lake. Stadtpark is also a popular open-air concert venue and is home to the Planetarium.
Sternschanze: Often referred to by the locals as Schanze. Great place to go out and especially to watch the football i.e. soccer games at.
