What is a Happy Place?
A happy place is somewhere you can go that you associate with positive energy and experiences. It’s a place you’ve been to before that brings back good memories every time you think of it. It’s someplace you can go to in your head that you can visualize as well as someplace you can go to physically.
Here’s a broadcast (from Facebook Live) on where I talk about it. Watch if you’re the visual type or read on below if you’re the reading type.
Examples of Happy Places
Some examples are the beach, the mountain, a nearby park, an outdoor balcony, the farmer’s market or even a favorite chair or yoga mat. It could be sitting by the pool, at the library with your head in a book or at a coffee shop sipping your favorite cup of joe. The options are endless!
My Happy Place Now
My number one happy place has always been the beach. There’s something about the sound of the crashing waves, the feeling of sand between my toes and the sight of the endless blue sky that puts a smile on my face and lifts my spirits.
Initially, when I lived in NC, it was Charleston, SC. The problem with Charleston was that it was a three-hour drive to get there so that certainly wasn’t the ideal place. Thankfully, now that I live in LA, there’s a beach nearby so you’ll often find me relaxing on the sand in Santa Monica or Malibu or even walking on the boardwalk in Venice. Anywhere where I can hear the waves crashing – makes me happy.
When I’m visiting my family in NC, where there’s no beach close by, I have to switch it up a bit. So now when I’m there, my happy place is an outdoor balcony my friend has filled with beautiful flowers and lots of herbs. I also love the nearby park. I bring a blanket, my dog (Honey Bunny), a good book and we’re all set.
As it turns out, I actually have a few happy places. Some of my other ones are the farmer’s market, the grocery store and when I’m cooking. Anything with food makes me smile. When I shop, whether it’s at the market or store, I get in the zone, my mind goes blank and I think only about the ingredients and how to use them. When I’m cooking, my focus and energy go directly into the food and any worries of the day fade away.
Why Have a Happy Place?
Everyone deserves to have a place they can go to that makes them feel light and free. It’s important that it’s someplace you can go to physically as well as visualize in your head. It’s kind of like meditation in the sense that it helps you clear your mind and get away from the stresses of everyday life. As the urban dictionary explains it, it’s a place you can think of that gives you the warm and fuzzies.
When you feel overwhelm, sadness, frustration or anger setting in, it’s time to retreat to your happy place. And if you can’t get there physically, let your mind take you there. With some practice, you can reset, rejuvenate and get your creative juices flowing so when you go back to your responsibilities, you can tackle them with lifted spirits and a renewed sense of purpose.
