There was a time I would have loved to look like Charlize Theron or Kim Kardashian but alas, it never happened.
We all know that our bodies are completely unique from each another. Unless we invest in a crazy amount of plastic surgery, we’re never going to look like anyone else. (And if you do, chances are you’ll look a pretty ridiculous version!)
Then why is it that we all keep trying to squeeze into the same box and try the same diets over and over? If we look nothing alike, why do we expect our insides to work the same as someone else’s?
You have to ask yourself…
How many diet books have you helped fly off the shelves?
How many times have you run to google to search for the latest health trend?
And no matter how many times you try and fail, you keep doing the same old things time and time again, right?
As intelligent as all the books, experts, doctors, articles and other outside sources are, they don’t take into account our feelings and intuition – or their effect on our body physically and emotionally.
The Brain Inside Your Gut.
Our brain and our stomach are neurologically very closely connected. In fact, your gut actually has a brain per say and that’s where many of our signals related to emotion and food come from!
Think about how you feel when you’re eating in a relaxed state or environment versus eating during a stressful situation. We usually feel it in our gut, don’t we? And most likely we feel it emotionally and physically.
If you’re eating at the dinner table when a disagreement breaks out, you probably won’t feel like eating anymore and the food you have eaten isn’t sitting very well. You may even have an upset stomach which very much affects your digestion and whether your body is able to assimilate nutrients from your food. This is a very different feeling than when things are peaceful and you’re enjoying a nice meal. The same applies to when you’re feeling rushed versus calm.
Good digestion and nutrient absorption are equally important for achieving and maintaining an ideal weight range. When we aren’t absorbing enough nutrients, we stay hungry, which leads to craving and eating more food even when we may not still be hungry.
Similarly, eating while working on an intense project or business transaction will often result in missing the signals that your body has had enough food.
Your Body Changes Continuously.
Not only do each of our bodies vary significantly from one another, but our own body differs from itself continuously.
Think back at the transitions within your own life.
As a baby, you transitioned from your mother’s breast milk and eventually, to solid food. You couldn’t care less that your mother’s milk was 52% fat.
And when you were a teenager, your needs were different than when you were a child. Perhaps you were an athlete and could eat your family out of house and home. Or maybe you could drink the night away and still show up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for work the next day.
Doesn’t it make sense that if our bodies change, that our diets need to change too? Therefore, something that may have worked for you a few years ago, (or maybe even a few months ago!) may not work for you now.
As humans, we’re all different and we’re always constantly changing. Our bodies, our minds, and our lifestyle are all one-of-a-kind and continuously developing.
So what works for your sister or your best friend, may not work for you.
This is great news!
This means that there’s no perfect diet for everyone. It means that it’s not your fault that the diets you keep trying, keep failing. And it means that you can eat food you enjoy that mirror your lifestyle and desires!
So if you think outside the box and learn how to listen to your body, you’ll notice the signals it sends you. You’ll feel fuller faster, stop unnecessary cravings, digest your food better and absorb the nutrients from your food. And as a result, you’ll lose weight and feel better!
